This past summer I stayed four amazing days in Mykonos, Greece (not nearly enough if you ask me). In this post I will share everything we did on our Mykonos trip that I recommend, as well as a few things I WISH we could have done!
This post is all about the must do activities for the perfect Mykonos trip!
1. Explore Mykonos Town
I know this seems like it would go without saying, but believe me, it deserves to be said. Whether you are dropped off at the bus stop right outside of Mykonos Town or you walk from one of the nearby resorts like we did, entering town is like entering a fantasy.
When I say explore, I really mean WANDER. The white painted stone pathways wind through beautiful white buildings with vibrant blue doors and windows, draped in bougainvillea. Take whatever wandering path calls to you, because each new alley leads to more shops and restaurants to discover.
Around ever corner there is a place for a gorgeous photo moment (go ahead, take the picture)! Then walk along the waters edge through the Old Port and into Little Venice. It is like walking through a Greek postcard.
2. Shop for gifts and SOUVENIRS
As you wander through the Mykonos streets there are endless shops, ranging from kitschy souvenirs to high end retailers. The image you will see most often is the Evil Eye, a Greek symbol believed to ward off negative energy and curses. The beautiful blue image is incorporated into stunning jewelry and adorns everything from t-shirts to wind chimes.
In these shops you can find just about anything you’d need for friends and family back home. And then when it’s time to find something upscale (maybe for yourself), there are rows of high end shops, both recognizable retailers and local boutiques. There is something for everyone to remember their Mykonos trip.
3. Eat Amazing Greek Food
There is a good chance this is a huge draw for you already, but let me reiterate: eat well and eat often. You won’t be disappointed that you did.
If you’re looking for something quick and easy, check out Souvlaki Story for a giant souvlaki platter. There are also dozens of places to get a quick gyro while you explore. No matter where you go, don’t miss out on the tzatziki (a refreshing greek yogurt and cucumber dip).
When it comes to a nicer dining experience there were several places that didn’t disappoint. Nice N Easy has a gorgeous view over Little Venice and the Mykonos Windmills. They have tons of outdoor seating and delicious food. Kastro’s Restaurant also has a spectacular view and menu. They even have two tables that hang over the water (book ahead)!
When it comes to fine dining, nothing beats M Eating. The food was both exquisite looking and absolutely delicious. Don’t miss out on the passionfruit “Porn Star” martini, either. Be sure to make a reservation, you don’t want to miss it!
4. Take a Dip
After walking around and working up a sweat, there’s nothing more refreshing than taking a dip. Whether this is at your resort or hotel pool, or one of the beautiful beaches, take a minute to recharge with a relaxing swim!
Mykonos is most definitely known for their beaches. There are several that are a short bus ride from Mykonos Town. Ornos Beach and Agios Ioannis Beach are two of them. Crystal blue waters and beautiful beaches make these two sites a must visit! If you’re up for even more adventure, there are dozens of beaches that line the island, just waiting to be discovered!
Or if you’re looking for something even more special, check out a Catamaran Cruise With Meals and Drinks from Viator. This way you can get out of the throng of people and enjoy the open waters with some spectacular views.
5. Visit the WindMills
Right outside of Mykonos Town, up on a hill lie a row of old Windmills. While seeing the windmills up close makes for a great sight in themselves, the real view comes from the top of the hill. Heaps of visitors line up to get their picture with both the historic windmills, as well as the stunning coastal view it looks over. Come and watch a sunset from this spot, you won’t regret it!
6. Experience Mykonos Nightlife
While Mykonos is incredibly lovely during the day, the town comes to life at night. After dinner reservations have been finished, people come out ready to explore the night. All along the Old Port cove as well as winding through Mykonos Town, there are bars and night clubs waiting to host you. Grab a drink (again, the Porn Star martini is amazing), have a seat, listen to some music and do some people watching (or meet some new people).
7. Rent a Scooter/ATV
Just outside of Mykonos town, lining the streets, there are dozens of scooter and ATV rentals vying for your business. When we were there, we decided against renting because we were only there a short time, and most places were booked. But if we had one more day there, I wouldn’t have missed it!
For the scooter/vespa rentals you may need to have a motorcycle license (we received conflicting info), but for the ATVs and Buggy’s you just need your regular license. Having access to transportation allows you to explore the island as you choose. But a word of caution: be careful because the streets are narrow and there are often people and cars trying to navigate through.
Enjoy Your Trip!
