Wilmington, NC holds a very special place in my heart. I went to school at UNCW and spent four of the most fun years of my life in the coastal beach town. Between my time there and my visits since, I have learned all the tips and tricks for the best things to do in Wilmington, NC!
This post is all about fun things to do in Wilmington, NC!
1. Eat Dinner in a “Thai Hut” at Indochine
Not only is Indochine one of the BEST restaurants in Wilmington (truly, its delicious), but they also have one of the most fun dining experiences you can have in their “Thai Huts” out back. Go right when they open for dinner to ensure you can get one. But even if you can’t get a hut, I can assure you the food and ambiance will not disappoint.
2. Wander around the idyllic Airlie Gardens
Tucked just off the inlet near Wrightsville Beach is the dreamy Airlie Gardens. These sprawling gardens border the shore and are home to some of the largest and most stunning trees. During your wandering you will also see a lovely historic chapel, flowers, and a pergola walk to a gorgeous water fountain. This is a great place to take your time and enjoy good weather and a gorgeous setting.
3. Get a tan at Wrightsville beach
Wrightsville Beach is one of my favorite American beaches I’ve ever been to (but I might be biased). It is a long stretch of residential beaches, none of the resorts and high-rises that exist in some other NC beaches. Wide, white-sand beaches lined with beautiful sea dunes are the perfect place to set up a lounge chair and get a tan. If you don’t have beach gear, head over to Wings and then park at one of the free spots or public beach access spots.
4. Grab a scoop (or two) at Boombalatti’s
If you’re looking for a delicious local sweet treat, look no further than Boombalatti’s ice cream. Their three stores are home to some of the most unique and tasty homemade ice cream flavors. And if you can’t decide which you want, they even have multi-scoop samplers!
5. Do some shopping at the Cotton Exchange
This block of historic buildings has over 30 businesses to shop with as you explore around. Cobblestone walkways and open-air courtyards give you the feeling of being in the original Port City. From local artisans selling their art, to nail salons and coffee shops, the Cotton Exchange has tons to keep you entertained.
6. Grab a book at Old Books on Front Street
This quaint little bookshop has titles stacked just about everywhere (including a water fountain)! Take some time to wander through and get an old or new book to remember your trip by. Books make great gifts or even a useable souvenir to remember your trip!
7. Go out to the beach bars
Right along the main drag of Wrightsville Beach on Lumina Ave there are several restaurants and bars that at night become the beach bars. Jerry Allen’s, Lagerheads, and Neptunes are some of the dives you should drop into. Be prepared for the bars to be packed with both locals and students alike. And once you’ve worked up an appetite, head over for a slice of pizza at Vito’s.
8. stroll the riverwalk
In the historic Downtown Wilmington, you can walk all along the water from one end to the other. This Riverwalk offers stunning views, a breeze off the water and tons of places to shop and eat. This is a great way to spend some time exploring Downtown Wilmington.
9. Get a killer burrito at Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn
This place is an absolute staple in Wilmington. Located near the University, this Burrito Barn is host to an eclectic atmosphere and absolutely delicious, creative burritos. And with the burrito and chips, you must pay a visit to their salsa bar. It is equipped with everything from traditional salsas to an amazing pineapple-habanero or peach salsa. This is truly a must-visit.
10. Scope out some filming locations
If you know anything about Wilmington, one of the things you know it’s most famous for is hosting a number of film and television productions. From Dawson’s Creek to One Tree Hill to several Nicholas Sparks movie adaptations, there have been so many things shot in the city. Chances are, as you walk around town you may even notice some of the locations from your favorite shows or movies. But if you are looking for something specific, there are some guides that break down locations and address, like this one for One Tree Hill. But remember if you go to a private location or stumble upon something film, be respectful!
11. Check out Chancellors walk at UNCW
If you feel a call toward something collegiate, I would add walking around University of North Carolina Wilmington to your list. This college campus is growing leaps and bounds and makes for a great place to explore, even if you aren’t a prospective student. Dotted with large brick buildings, towering trees and bustling with students, Chancellor’s Walk on campus is great for a stroll.
12. Grab a cocktail and watch the sunset at Clou 9 or reel cafe’s rooftop bar
While most east coast beaches don’t have the privilege of a water sunset, Wilmington is one of the rare exceptions because from Downtown Wilmington the sun sets over the river. And there are several great rooftop bars to enjoy the view in. Cloud 9 is the rooftop of the Embassy Suites Downtown and has a great view of the Port City. Reel Cafe also has a rooftop view of the river.
13. Look at the stunning historic homes near downtown
Toward the south side of Downtown Wilmington below Market St and Third St, you will find tons of historic homes and buildings. This isn’t probably on every “things to do in Wilmington” list, but I think it should be, especially if you are a fan of architecture or old buildings. Wander around these streets and you will see stunning buildings and even some signage telling their significance in history.
14. Get Fondue at the Little Dipper
If you are looking for a fun interactive dinner experience, look no further than The Little Dipper. This local fondue joint blows the usual Melting Pot out of the water when it comes to flavor, ingredients and quality. Come for a 4-course meal, or for one of their specials during the week like Ladies Night for amazing deals. No matter what you decide, come hungry because you will leave so full.
15. Visit Carolina Beach and Britt’s Donuts
If you’re looking for something special outside of Wilmington proper, opt for a ride to Carolina Beach and go experience Britt’s Donuts. This donut shop is renown, but make sure you go during their open season! Carolina beach is also another quaint, colorful seaside town.
16. Go Paddle Boarding or Kayaking
Wilmington is also a great place for the outdoor adventurer. Companies like Wrightsville Kayak Co. have kayak and paddle board rentals that you can take out on the water. Enjoy a beautiful day on the water.
17. Enjoy the tasting menu at Dram Yard
There are so many wonderful restaurants to enjoy in Wilmington, but Dram Yard has a delicious and elegant Chef’s tasting menu that I highly recommend. Arrive early and have a drink at the Gazebo Bar outside and then head inside for a delicious southern coastal inspired meal.
Enjoy your trip!
