If you’ve had the privilege of exploring France, there is a good chance you have come across the French lunch staple sandwich that is the Croque Madame/Monsieur. This delicious but humble sandwich quickly became a favorite of mine.
A Croque Monsieur consists of ham and cheese on bread with a béchamel sauce that is baked until bubbly and delicious. And then it is bumped up to a Madame when you add an egg on top! Both versions of this sandwich are absolutely delicious and a great flavor profile to translate into a simple Croque Madame Casserole.
My Casserole Twist
As much as I love the original sandwich, sometimes it’s nice to have something that can quickly, easily, and deliciously feed a group. So I decided to take the flavors and incorporate them into casserole form. I’m calling it Madame instead of Monsieur because of the addition of eggs as the base of the casserole.
What you’ll Need
Equipment
First and foremost you’ll need a good baking dish! I recommend an about 9x12in casserole dish like this one! Staub makes great baking dishes with a good deep well that is perfect for this Croque Madame casserole. In terms of equipment this is really all you need!
Food
Croissants: For this Croque Madame casserole, I decided to use French influence by using croissants instead of any other bread. Croissants make for a light, buttery base for this yummy dish.
Ham: The next ingredient in this casserole is the deli ham. There are so many options when it comes to the meat. This is a great recipe if you want to use some leftover holiday spiral ham! But I generally use honey ham from the deli. It adds a bit of sweetness that I think pairs wells with the cheese and croissants. Also, if you aren’t a fan of ham, turkey can also be substituted.
Cheese: The cheeses are such a crucial component of this Croque Madame casserole. The traditional sandwich is made with gruyere cheese, but I like to do a mix of gruyere and swiss cheese. Trader Joe’s even has a swiss/Jarlsburg grated cheese bag that will do in a pinch. But if you can, try to freshly grate your cheese as opposed to pre-bagged, because it tends to melt and incorporate better.
Egg Mixture: The last component of this recipe is the egg mixture that brings the Croque Madame casserole together. The eggs are whisked together with a good dijon mustard, some heavy cream, grated nutmeg and salt and pepper. The nutmeg and dijon are taste components carried over from the traditional sandwich, that give this casserole that same delicious taste.
