Jump to RecipeThe Bread
When it comes to the bread, there really are so many options. I opted for a challah loaf, but this could also be amazing with a croissant loaf (or just croissants), brioche bread, french bread and more. The key is to dice it into large chunks and let them dry out for a little while. The dryer the bread, the more it will absorb the french toast egg mixture.
The Filling
The thing that gives this the perfect french toast casserole consistency is the egg filling! Combining eggs, cream, maple syrup and spices makes a mixture that is poured all over the bread lined baking dish. The bread soaks up the mixture and gives it a custard like texture and taste!
The Topping
My absolute favorite bit, and the part that makes this a pecan french toast casserole is the pecan topping. Combining pecans, butter, and brown sugar you make the yummiest, crispiest topping.
Combine all of these together and you have a delicious breakfast and brunch dish that you must try!
Pecan French Toast Casserole
Equipment
- Baking Dish about 9x13in
Ingredients
- 1 loaf Bread challah, brioche, croissants
- 10 Eggs large
- 2 cups Cream
- 1 tbsp Cinnamon
- 2 cups Pecans chopped
- 1 cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 cup Butter softened
- 1/2 cup Maple Syrup divided
Instructions
- Cut the bread into 1-2 inch cubes and allow to sit out to dry out for a couple hours.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Spray or grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Line the bottom with the cubed bread. There should be overlap, not just an even layer.
- Whisk together the eggs, cream, cinnamon, and a 1/4 cup of maple syrup.
- Pour the egg mixture all over the bread. Make sure to hit the whole surface areas of the bread pieces. But the mixture should not fully submerge the bread.
- Mix together the chopped pecans, brown sugar and butter by hand until it forms a crumble like texture and is fully incorporated. Sprinkle the mixture over the top of the casserole.
- Bake covered for about 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for another 10-15 minutes until the tops has some crispy bits.
- Remove and drizzle with the remaining maple syrup. Serve and enjoy!
Enjoy!
